Leta 1955 ga je <strong>Muddy Waters<\/strong> povabil v Chicago, da bi se pridru\u017eil njegovi skupini. Cotton je postal vodja Muddyjeve skupine in ostal z njo do leta 1965. Takrat je ustanovil <strong>Jimmy Cotton Blues Quartet<\/strong>, z <strong>Otisom Spannom<\/strong> na klavirju, da bi \u0161e vedno med nastopi snemal z Muddy Watersovo skupino. Kasneje se je temu odpovedal.
