Bil je odli\u010den kitarist, skladatelj in odrski gara\u010d. Pogosto je nastopal z indijansko perjanico na glavi, njegova stara mama, ki ga je vzgajala v rani mladosti, je bila namre\u010d staroselka plemena Cherokee. Star 13 let je za\u010del igrati kitaro, bil je samouk. Prvi nastopi so bili z gospel zasedbami, tudi z <strong>Blind Boys of Alabama<\/strong>. Kasneje, v Chicagu, je igral tudi z <strong>Magic Samom<\/strong> in <strong>Otisom Rushom<\/strong>.
