Leta 1978 se je preselil v New York in v 80ih od\u0161el v Austin (Texas), kjer se je v skupini <strong>Rank and File<\/strong> <em>nalezel<\/em> country-rock alternative, nato pa ustanovil skupino <strong>True Believers<\/strong> (z bratom <strong>Javierjem<\/strong>). Prva samostojna albuma &#8216;<em>Gravity<\/em>&#8216; in &#8216;<em>Thirteen Years<\/em>&#8216; sta iz\u0161la leta 1992 in 1994.
